HANGING BASKET GUIDE PLANTING

Once you basket is lined you need to think about putting your plants in.  Hanging Basket Guide Planting has some tips.  If you wish to put flowers one the side of your basket as well as on top then first make a few holes in your lining to allow the plant roots through then put some multi purpose compost over the basket lining.  Then feed your side plants roots through the holes from the middle out giving each plant a little space between them, making sure that the roots are touching the compost then put more compost over the top.  If top plants are required plant them in the layer of compost you put over the side plants.  A tip is to use moss with the compost when putting layers of plants in your basket.  Another tip is to use 75% multi purpose compost and 25% John Innes mixed together to make your plants last longer.  Also use slow release fertiliser which reduces the amount of times you need to feed your basket and water retaining gel granules which helps with watering.

Hanging Basket in full bloom

Here is a basket that I have done.  The lining was already attached to the basket when bought but I put a few stones at the bottom to help with drainage. I then used a good multi purpose compost.  The plants I have planted are called Petunias and when flower will be a mixture of colour.  The plants were originally plug plants when bought, which I seperated into different pots and allowed to grow further in a green house before planting.  Water retaining gel granules were also used.

In time with the proper care and attention this is what your baskets will look like.  Do not hang out your baskets until the end of May or when the frosts have stopped.  Then once out they need to be regularly fed and watered.  Liquid tomato food is good to use but follow the directions carefully.  In the middle of summer when the weather gets hotter you may need to water your baskets twice a day.
